Do something by buying NOTHING on 2/28, popovers & potato leak soup, & 3 helpful/hopeful updates
Time to exercise the power of the pocketbook, enjoy this comfort food power combo, tips for how to stop freaking out about Trump & more
Hi folks,
I hope everyone’s week is going well in spite of what’s happening at the federal level. It was so nice to see the news about Monday’s protests and the next civic action is even easier. You don’t have to go anywhere or do anything to participate in next Friday, February 28’s Economic Blackout Day.
The idea behind this day is elegantly simple — we hit the billionaires like Elon Musk who are bulldozing democracy and the billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerburg who are complicit with those efforts— where it hurts the most — right in the profits.
Meta fired its fact checkers and got rid of its DEI initiatives, Amazon and Target are dissolving their DEI efforts, Google is also saying buh bye to DEI, changed the name of The Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America”, and removed Black History Month, Pride Month, Indigenous Peoples Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, and Holocaust Remembrance Day from Google Calendar, and the Washington Post (owned by Jeff Bezos), recently pulled a huge ad urging Trump to fire Musk, Airbnb’s co-founder is playing a role in Musk’s DOGE, etc.
All of this craven toadying is designed to ensure that they continue to make more money.
So let’s disrupt “business as usual”.
To join the fun and send a message about financial power and influence, all you have to do is avoid spending money at major retailers, fast food chains, and gas stations on February 28. Easy peasy! There is also a potential weeklong boycott of Amazon coming up in early March - stay tuned.
RECIPES: POTATO LEEK SOUP & PERFECT POPOVERS
The weather here in upstate NY has been frigid with gale force winds, the ground has been a literal sheet of ice, and nearly everyone I know has been sick. In other words, a perfect time to make potato leek soup and popovers a warm, healing, comfort food duo. If you’ve never made popovers, do NOT be intimidated — they may look fancy and French but they’re remarkably easy.
Perfect popovers - these are delicious with butter, dipped in soup or filled with jam for breakfast.
Potato leek soup - you can easily make this creamy soup vegan if you use vegetable stock.
